Protestantische Ethik? – Werte als Folgen der Reformation in Deutschland und den USA
Zusammenfassung
Dieser Beitrag untersucht den Einfluss der Reformation auf heutige Einstellungen und Wertorientierungen in Deutschland und in den USA. Ausgangspunkt der Analyse ist Max Webers These zum Zusammenhang von Protestantismus und Kapitalismus. Die Untersuchung beginnt mit der Nachzeichnung des Diffusionsprozesses protestantischer Werte von Europa in die USA anhand von Einwanderungsdaten und historischen religiösen Statistiken. Dabei wird ein starker Einfluss deutschsprachiger Einwanderer auf die religiöse Landschaft in Amerika herausgestellt. Die anschließende Auswertung von Umfragedaten des World Values Survey anhand von Faktoren- und Regressionsanalysen zeigt unter anderem, dass in den USA bis heute ein starker Zusammenhang zwischen Protestantismus und Kapitalismus besteht: Protestantinnen und Protestanten sind dort deutlich kapitalistischer eingestellt als andere, und zwar sowohl in wirtschafts- als auch in sozialpolitischen Fragen. Die Ergebnisse der statistischen Untersuchung in beiden Ländern werden abschließend anhand von Experteninterviews miteinander verglichen und interpretiert.

Protestant Ethic? – Values resulting from the Protestant Reformation in Germany and in the USA
Summary
This article analyzes the impact of the Protestant Reformation on contemporary attitudes and values in Germany and in the US. The analysis’ starting point is Max Weber’s thesis on the interrelation between Protestantism and capitalism. The diffusion process of Protestant values from Europe to the US is retraced by means of official immigration data as well as historical religious statistics. The article shows a strong influence of German-speaking immigrants on the American religious landscape. The subsequent examination of survey data from the World Values Survey using factor and regression analyses reveals that to this day there is a strong connection between Protestantism and capitalism in the US: Protestants are clearly more capitalistic than others, namely regarding economic as well as welfare policy questions. The results of the statistical evaluation in both countries are then compared to each other and interpreted based on expert interviews.
